LILA BLUE

They bring an incredible authority to songwriting and singing...enormous fearlessness and panache" - Ann Powers, NPR Music

Biography

LILA BLUE (they/she) is a twenty-three year old non-binary and queer folk musician, singer-songwriter, playwright and performer based out of Brooklyn.

They have been performing and composing professionally since early childhood in communally devised theater with the likes of Bread and Puppet Theater and the Lake Lucille Chekhov Project, as well as developing a solo music career. Their projects navigate themes of grief, joy, intergenerational trauma, rage, queerness and collisions with divine and haunted spirits, stemming from their own intuitive practices (which include writing in their sleep). They have composed music for film and television, most notably for MTV and Lifetime.

They released their fourth LP, “Sweet Pea,” on Nov. 10th, 2023, on MOXE. It’s garnered much critical praise including Ann Powers of NPR, “they bring an incredible authority to songwriting and singing...enormous fearlessness and panache….”

Lila says “If someone asked me to tell them who I am, I’d give them this record.” Stream “Sweet Pea” on all streaming platforms.

They’re currently developing an original musical about the life and work of artist Hilma af Klint.

Listen to Lila Blue

  • “Lila Blue’s exploration of grief and growth is raw and powerful on their fourth full-length album." - Chris Sanley, KEXP

“Lila Blue writes songs with angst, tender love, detailed guitar lines, descriptive lyrics, and witchy energy." - Sara Gougeon, The Bluegrass Situation

“Their vocals stretch, howl, and soar, feeling glassy and longing as they reach for the high notes while remaining rich and resonant in their lower register. Even with a relatively subdued and acoustic instrumental palette, the track has a sense of galloping momentum, with Blue’s lyrics tumbling out in a confessional rush up until the track’s very last moments.” - Caleb Campbell, Under the Radar

“It’s an amazing album. My wife and I were like, there’s no way they’re 23…When I first listened to ‘Changeling,’ it felt a bit menacing to me. But it’s also in part about your (Blue’s) coming out process, so now I’m hearing triumph.” - Rachel Cholst, Rainbow Rodeo

"A tantalizing fever dream, “Sweet Pea” is two minutes of sweet folk seduction. The fast-paced title track off Lila Blue’s upcoming fourth album (out November 10 via MOXE) is a fun, fierce, and fiery eruption of desire from one of Brooklyn’s most exciting and compelling new voices – an artist who truly beats to the tune of their own drum, full stop." - Mitch Mosk, Atwood Magazine

“You can practically feel the autumn winds sweeping in when listening to ‘There Is a Drought,’ the latest from Brooklyn-based musician Lila Blue. The song arrives ahead of a full November project, titled Sweet Pea, and the earthy, rugged offering feels pulled from another time — lean into the air of mystery the track conjures. It’s a great vocal performance from Lila, who speaks to the forthcoming album, saying, ‘You cannot have rebirth without decomposition and decay. Grief and growth sit side by side.’” - Mary Siroky, Consequence
